Composting in community initiative launches in Puka region

An initiative for composting in community was launched through a three-day activity in Puka region, on May 6th-8th, 2015.

Local Government Units in Puka (Puka and Fushë Arrëz municipalities as well as Qerret, Qafë Mali and Qelëz communes), represented by Puka Municipality, in cooperation with “Sabah Sinani” high school, assisted by Co-Plan and with the support of DLDP and Environmental Network (ENV.net) to promote the inter-local scheme and composting in community initiative, organized the promoting event “We compost together for a healthier environment”.

 

This program serves as assistance for local units and local experts to apply in practice the composting in community as well as for carrying out informative and awareness campaigns by increasing the level of knowledge and learning practices of students in support of recycling and composting.

To raise the awareness and to educate the local community and students of Puka region, a series of activities were carried out, starting from the preparation of informative and awareness materials with the support of volunteers from Polis University. These students, together with representatives of Puka Municipality, set up and trained a group of volunteers comprising 15 students and teachers selected from a school in Puka to follow and maintain the process of composting in the school and its promotion throughout Puka region. The volunteers’ group, under the coordination of Puka Municipality, undertook awareness and polling process by contacting community members and distributing awareness and informative materials, such as posters and leaflets.

To finalize this program, the May 8th was selected as a launching date (Day of Europe), by organizing an open event to promote composting.

The event was attended by Puka Mayor, Mr. Beqir Arifaj, the principal of “Sabah Sinani” school, Mrs. Anxhelina Paloka, as well as representatives from the Sub-Prefecture, Education Directorate, Fushë Arrëz municipality and the secondary school. The activity was widely promoted in Puka region from local media, raising the awareness of the local community and students in Puka region for this initiative.
